CHARLOTTE Youth Michael Palardy Jersey , N.C. (AP) —work with the Carolina Panthers, while Cam Newton continued to be limited — even on the kickball field.Grier, the team’s rookie third-round draft pick, threw for the first time with his new NFL team as the Panthers opened rookie minicamp on a practice field outside of Bank of America stadium.Newton, who is coming off shoulder surgery, spent his day inside the stadium hosting his fifth annual “Kicking it with Cam” celebrity kickball tournament to benefit youth in the areas of education, diversity and inclusion, and wellness. In the past Newton has participated in the event, but he did not Friday.“It’s all right, it’s getting there Stitched Michael Palardy Jersey ,” Newton said about his surgically repaired right shoulder.Newton underwent an arthroscopic procedure on Jan. 24, but has not thrown a football yet. When asked if he knows when he will be cleared to throw, Newton shook his head no.When Newton does return, he said he won’t change how he approaches the game, which means more running for the former No. 1 overall pick.“I’m not changing. I’m too old to change,” Newton said on the eve of his 30th birthday. “But I can get better. That is one thing I can do. At this point the things that make me (who I am) are instilled and cemented in. It’s just up to me to take my game to the next level and get better.”Instead of playing his normal role as a kickball pitcher, Newton mingled with some of celebrities on hand, including boxer Evander Holyfield — whose son, running back Elijah Holyfield, recently signed as an undrafted free agent — former NFL player Terrell Owens and several current Panthers teammates including Christian McCaffrey and Kawann Short. He also did some dancing Youth Julius Peppers Jersey , too.Grier was hoping to attend the kickball event, too, but was a little busy learning his new job.Grier, who grew up in the Charlotte area, was with Carolina’s other rookies going through two short practices and spending most of the day in the classroom with coaches learning plays. He said his primary goal this weekend is to show coaches that he’s willing to work hard and that he’s coachable.“I think that is important,” Grier said. “Just fitting into the system and doing whatever it takes to help the Panthers win.”Newton said he is looking forward to helping Grier develop as a QB.The Panthers selected Grier with the 100th overall pick two weeks ago with the idea that he could come in and backup Newton — and perhaps develop into a starting quarterback down the road.“I have to be ready to play,” Grier said. “So that is my kind of goal, and my role, right now. All of the twos (backups) need to act like ones (starters) and that just means you have to be ready to play when your number is called.”Grier and Newton have met in the past. When Grier took the practice field Friday, he was in a familiar place. Several years ago he led Davidson Day High School to a championship in a 7-on-7 football tournament sponsored by the Cam Newton Foundation. He got to meet Newton at the time. Now Stitched Julius Peppers Jersey , as surreal as he said it feels, he’s in the same quarterback room with the 2015 league MVP playing in the NFL.“I don’t remember if we took pictures,” Grier said recalling the 7-on-7 tournament. “But I remember Cam telling us to keep the energy up.” The Panthers drafted Greg Little at No. 37 overall and Will Grier at No. 100 overall." Panthers 2019 NFL DraftThe Carolina Panthers improved their roster by drafting Greg Little and Will Grier on Day 2New,9commentsThe Panthers drafted Greg Little at No. 37 overall and Will Grier at No. 100 overall.EDTWith Rounds 2 and 3 of the 2019 NFL Draft over, there’s a lot to reel in from the Carolina Panthers’ latest selections. Marty Hurney addressed additional needs on the offensive line (which came at a steep cost) and found a potential long-term backup for Cam Newton. Were these picks the smartest move the Panthers could’ve made?Assessing Greg LittleCarolina gave people mixed emotions when they decided to trade up to No. 37 to grab offensive tackle Greg Little in exchange for their Nos. 47 and 77 picks. With so much talent in the 2019 class, this could’ve been a costly mistake. Aside from the pass rush, which they implemented in the first round with Brian Burns, the Panthers were in dire need of a true left tackle. While trading away additional picks in the second and third round is risky, the Panthers felt an urge to nab one of the best tackles in the draft. There’s no question that Little has second round talent, if not first. His sloppiness and finesse blocking was an issue in his college career Youth Da’Norris Searcy Jersey , but these are things that can be cleaned up.He has a build that bulk up and add strength. He has good hand-coordination and arm length. The addition of Little gives Ron Rivera options and stability on the offensive line. With Taylor Moton more confident on the right side and Daryl Williams’ contract set to expire at the end of the season, the Panthers needed a promising left tackle to protect Newton. Had the Panthers waited, Little, as well as any of the other tackles, could’ve been gone. The Panthers knew they had a need and a filled an immediate roster spot. I think Little will pay off long-term, which makes the trade worth it. Will Grier offers insuranceLast season spiraled when Newton’s throwing shoulder began to give him issues, resulting in him being benched the last two regular season games in 2018. Carolina never had a secure backup in Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen, who were often called late in games to throw a hail mary. With the No. 100 overall pick, the Panthers gave themselves that much needed insurance when they selected quarterback Will Grier. Grier was viewed as a bit of a dark horse this draft. Some experts suspected he could’ve been a potential first-rounder, but due to lack of development Blue James Bradberry Jersey , he fell. Many question if Grier’s success at West Virginia was a benefit of the simplicity of his offense, but there’s no denying Grier has an arm and is confident. With Newton still in rehab for his right shoulder, having a promising backup is key. This selection could show to pay off sooner than later, if things don’t go smoothly for Newton’s rehabbing. Always prepare for the unpredictable, which is exactly what Hurney did. Overall, Hurney and the Panthers played smart in this year’s draft and went after players who will benefit them long-term.
