NEW ORLEANS -- While Rams rookie Jared Goff couldnt keep up with Drew Brees and the prolific New Orleans Saints, he just might have given Los Angeles hope that its No. 1 overall draft pick will in fact pan out. There were moments of brilliance as he showed off his touch, strength, and sometimes, guts, while throwing for 214 yards and three touchdowns in his first road start on Sunday. He made some mistakes, too, losing a fumble deep in Rams territory and throwing an interception near midfield. But coach Jeff Fisher sounded as if he was more concerned with his defense than Goffs performance in a 49-21 loss.Jared did a really nice job in the first half, especially in the two-minute drive, Fisher said. I thought he got better, which was encouraging.Goff is the latest in a string of heralded rookie QBs making themselves at home in the Superdome in one of their first road starts.Robert Griffin III in 2012, along with Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota in 2015, all led their teams to wins at New Orleans, completing a combined 70 percent of their passes for nearly 900 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions.Goff built on his first career start a week ago at home, a 14-10 loss to Miami in which he was just 55 percent passing with no touchdowns or interceptions.I obviously felt a lot more comfortable in my second game, just from experience, Goff said. Felt better out there -- was able to see it a lot better and it began to slow down a little bit for sure about halfway through the first half.Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro was impressed with the former California quarterback, who delivered several completions under pressure, releasing the ball accurately moments before absorbing heavy hits.He has pretty good arm talent. Hes young. Youre on the road in a hostile environment, and his books just starting, Vaccaro said. Each day, each month, each year is a new chapter for him. Hell keep growing.Against the Saints, he spread the ball around, hitting seven different receivers while completing 20 of 32 attempts. The Rams converted both of their red-zone chances with touchdown passes to Kenny Britt and Lance Kendricks.Goffs first career touchdown pass was a perfect throw to Tavon Austin, who caught the 24-yard scoring strike in stride in the end zone for a 7-0 Rams lead.Goff led Los Angeles on an eight-play, 79-yard drive at the end of the second quarter that ended with the touchdown pass to Kendricks and cut New Orleans lead to 28-21.He made some really good throws in the two-minute drive off his back foot and put the ball in the end zone, Fisher said.Added running back Todd Gurley: He definitely felt a lot more comfortable this game than last game -- came out spinning it that first half.He also, however, showed an inability to get rid of the ball when the pocket was collapsing on him. He was sacked three times and was hit a total of eight times when dropping back to pass. That might be what Goff focuses on this week as he prepares for the New England Patriots and his third start.I dont want to be out here saying Im happy with what we did or what I did or anything in between because Im really not if we dont win, Goff said. His effort backed up a strong performance by lefty Ariel Miranda as the Mariners remained in the thick of the congested wild-card race. The Mariners (79-70) are one game behind Toronto, which holds the second wild-card spot.Smith had a solo shot in the third and a three-run shot in the fourth, both on 3-1 pitches from Doug Fister (12-12). Smith had been 0-for-10 in his career against Fister but the eight-year veteran had a plan.Guys know what theyre doing when they are pitching and able to pitch to the corners, Smith said. You try to take the close ones, try to get into a good hitters count when they come after you.Smith, who now has 16 home runs on the season -- one short of his career high -- was patient enough to work both into hitters counts then connected on fastballs into the right-field seats.Youre constantly learning, how to approach at-bats, knowing what kind of swing you have going into a game, knowing what the pitcher is trying to do to you, Smith said. Over the course of a career you kind of fit the pieces a little better together.Fister said, I was just trying to attack with my sinker; he put a couple good swings on balls -- clearly.I just didnt execute today, thats what it comes down to. Balls down, balls up, all over the place. I let my team down.Miranda (5-1), acquired in a trade with Baltimore on July 31 for lefty Wade Miley, went seven innings -- his longest outing in 10 starts with Seattle -- allowing two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out eight.Heck of an outing, Mariners manager Scott Servais said. Hes on a heck of a roll. We certainly needed it. Hes gained so much confidence. You can certainly can see it.Miranda has won all four of his starts in September. The Cuban defector said, through an interpreter, its been a dream of mine (to be in a playoff chase) but never been there. Its really great to get there. Im happy with the work Ive been doing and happy to help the team.Houston manager A.J. Hinch said Miranda has a good fastball and a good spplit-change thing that he throws.dddddddddddd. Our guys hadnt seen a ton of him. ..He did a good job challenging us, but just above the zone and we swung under today and hit a lot of pop-ups in the infield, a few balls to the outfield. A couple balls to the track that could have changed the game a little bit. He kept enticing us with fastballs. The Mariners have won nine of their last 11 games.RECORD WHIFFSWith Jandel Gustaves strikeout of Shawn OMalley in the sixth, the Astros staff established a club record for strikeouts with 1,283. Theyve done it without even a 200-strikeout pitcher. For the most part we have a few guys who can spin their breaking balls when they need to, manager A.J. Hinch said. and the changeup is a big component of our pitching staff.SLOW START; FAST FINISHNori Aoki, who was sent to the minors twice this season to work on his offense, has found his batting eye this month.
